CON: A Look Ahead

The CON Commission will be reviewing the standards in 2020.

The Certificate of Need Commission will be reviewing the following CON standards in 2020:

  • Cardiac Catheterization
  • Hospital Beds
  • MRT (Radiation Therapy)
  • Open Heart Surgery
  • PET
  • Surgical Services (ORs – both in ASCs and Hospitals)

The Department of Health and Human Services will be accepting feedback on any changes that should be considered to these standards in October of 2019.

The CON Commission will also be considering updates to the Hospital Bed Need in 2020, which could result in additional Limited Access Areas (LAAs) being identified and/or additional beds being available.

Updates to the MRT, Inpatient Psych Beds, and Lithotripsy are expected in late 2019 as well as the potential for new standards related to CAR-T/Immune Effector Cell Therapy. Early 2020 should see updates to the CT, NICU/Special Care Nursery, and Nursing Home Bed standards.

The Department will be auditing PET and MRI services for compliance with CON standards in 2019, based on the 2017 CON Annual Survey data.
